In every age men and women have made spiritual pilgrimages in search of the knowledge and the wisdom necessary for personal enlightenment. These journeys have frequently taken them to distant lands where they have encountered numerous dangers and sometimes suffered immense hardship. Yet, in spite of the tremendous burdens of their travels, there is an unexplainable longing and sense of unrest that has carried them onwards. Deep within each of their hearts has been the hope and expectation that at the end of their long journey, lay precious knowledge and those sacred, enduring truths that might transform their lives forever. As long as each could remember, each of these spiritual pilgrims have dreamed of seeking out the great masters who would impart the wisdom and precious knowledge not revealed to ordinary men. Upon finally reaching the ancient temples occupied by those who are believed to have great insight and enlightenment, the weary traveler slowly approaches the master, falling at his feet. The pilgrim beseeches the master to reveal the great truths and profound wisdom which would result in his awakening. Tears slowly well up in the traveler's eyes as he begins to realize that the solemn utterances of the master fail to satisfy the deep yearning of his soul or to quench his spiritual thirst. Since ancient times, human beings have spent large parts of their lives turning to others to show them the paths that would assure their happiness and spiritual growth. Few have been sufficiently fortunate to realize that the truths that many require are rarely found in the words of the wise man or the guru. Similarly, personal growth is often not simply acquired by inspired words or the pronouncements of others. In our quest for an understanding of ourselves and the world around us, it is tempting to seek out those things which promise dramatic hidden means. What we often fail to realize is that the greatest personal and spiritual treasures lie deep within each of us and in the things we far too often take for granted...  Â

I became a Christian in'78 as a Freshman in high school. But my spiritual awakening came twenty years later and it came behind the gray walls of jail when I began a simple Thursday night Bible Study among and for my fellow inmates..............
It is that spark within us, it is recognizing the inherent good, in turning your own face from potential darkness to the light of all that is right and honorable and kind.
It is not found in the books or the words of others. Perhaps that is THEIR enlightenment, and THEIR self-perceived salvation. Perhaps it can be a trigger that helps you find your own personal reason for being...I'm not sure about that one.
Too little good is passed on in this world, everyone looks for their own salvation; seldom realizing it starts with helping others. Deeds, not just easy, platitudes and words.
Person to person is it passed.
Day by day, sometimes a fleeting moment at a time.
One Act, or action, at a time.
Good on you.

There is no secret at all in the spiritual journey ... enlightenment merely is the removal of all the veils that have hidden the truth that we are our hearts, and our hearts are innocent still. Love is what we are, for in our hearts the Heart of God is laid. It is no secret...merely knowledge that we have but misplaced because of our egos. When we know, we cease to ask questions.
I totally agree with you when you say: '...the greatest personal and spiritual treasures lie deep within each of us...'
The injunction, 'Seek not outside thyself!' is wisdom.
All enlightened masters say the same thing — just in different ways to differents audiences. I believe their purpose is to prepare you to go inside yourself and listen.
