The role of the media is different in many different ways and effects us in different ways also. The media controls what we see through the media, keeps coverage of different events, and also how much we see of a certain topic. The Media is broken down into three different groups. The Gatekeeper, the Scorekeeper, and the Watchdog.
Media is filtered by the gatekeeper, that is the role of the gatekeeper, to filter out what is being shown to us, the audience. For instance, the gatekeeper will choose what is going to be the main topic of discussion. Lets during the many different schools shootings that were taking place, that was the main topic of discussion on all the media channels. The Gatekeeper chooses to display these topics but, the second something else important happens then the main topic will switch over. For example, during the period of school shootings, Apple releases the word that they are coming out with a phone for AT&T as an exclusive. At this point, school shootings are old news, and the iPhone seems to be the new highlight. When this happens, its an example of how the gatekeeper is a major role on the media, and what we are shown.
The other type of group would be the scorekeeper. The scorekeepers role is very simple, they keep score of different important events. The scorekeeper would for example, keep coverage of the election polls during the Iowa caucus, and the primary, etc.. It is the scorekeepers role to keep the scores basically, of these events, and that's how we are aware of the scores, thanks to the scorekeeper.
The final group, which is a important group, would be the watchdog. The watchdogs are a familiar and very popular group. The watchdogs are basically the gossipy high school girls that are spreading rumors. That pretty much sums up a watchdog, a rumor. Watchdogs control how much of something we see, especially if its something that a majority of people are going to want to see. A perfect example politically would be Hillary Clinton, when she started tearing up during an interview, then instantly, its posted all over the internet and the news. Videos on you tube showing her "crying" and then people are talking about it everywhere because they don't want a women president that's going to cry all the time. Another example would be an issue involving a celebrity like Brittany Spears. Everything about her is posted on the news and internet, including her recent breakdown during the same time as the primaries. Luckily the watchdogs could understand what was more important, the next President or another celebrity breakdown?
After review of the major roles of the media, you can see how much it does affect us, and how important it is that we have these three groups. Sometimes people do not really look into the various forms of media and there roles on us since a lot of people do not know the details behind the different roles of the media. Now you know, how much the media effects us, and how the different roles change what we see, and how we are affected.
