My plan is about $80 each month. It's a family share plan, with my husband, through Alltel. We don't go through nearly all the minutes that we have each month, though. We use our vonage phone a lot more often! The only reason that we keep our cell phones is because we need them, because we live out in the middle of nowhere, and you can freeze to death in just a very few minutes here during the winter. We also need them when we are traveling home (1100 miles) so we can call hotels and keep in contact with our family, etc.

In total, only about 1.2 billion people have a cell phone with millions of Indians and millions of people in the PRC adding cell phone service each month. Africa is expected to be the next place with tremendous cell phone sales in the near future.
Around 4 or 5 years ago, some very dear friends of mine (the husband was my ninth grade English teacher many years ago) were going home from their daughter's wedding....they were driving on a gravel country road, and there was a 4-way stop....well, here comes this woman in a van, of course, chatting away on her cell phone and NOT paying any attention to her driving......she flew through the stop sign and hit my friends' van HEAD ON.........killing the man....he was thrown from the van and ended up in a ditch (now this man was not small......he was almost 7 ft. tall and weighed around 350 or so lbs.!).......his wife was found dangling from one of the windows.........she managed to survive but was a quadraplegic for 3 years, when she finally died as well.
I had to learn of this ungodly tragedy over the t.v....and late at night.........one of my mom's friends tried desperately to call me before I heard it another way, but I had been at work and had just gotten home...........when I heard it on t.v., I just screamed.............we had to drive 83 miles back home for the visitation before I would believe/accept it.
Oh yeah, and the woman who was talking on the cell phone, she was killed instantly, with the cell phone in her hand......I guess it had to litterally be "dug out" from her hand.........
This, my friends, is why I REFUSE to have a cell phone, and I am perfectly happy with my home phone and having an e-mail address/IM'g!!!!!
My husband and I each carry ours where ever we go. We both work strange and sometimes varying hours. Neither of us can take phone calls at work, so it is important for us to be able to reach each other and leave messages when needed. We also have a lot of older family members that can reach us whenever they need to.
I have a long commute and come home at night, so it is important for me to have my cell phone for emergencys, too.
That would also mean no land line for dial up. Can't afford both, or, why? High speed internet would be nice, so checking total expenses needed.
I was wondering the same, Elizabeth.
