If you ask a conservative Republican what he/she thinks government's goals are or should be, you will likely get some fairly short and specific answer like, ”I want smaller government, less taxes, a strong defense, the Constitution followed without reinventing it as we go along, and a culture of life.” In other words, a small set of overarching goals, a philosophy if you will of what they believe America should be doing politically.
When, on the other hand, you pose this question to a liberal Democrat, you may get some vague statements like “a fair America”, or “equal treatment of women and minorities” or “change” or some other broad statements against which no one would disagree. Notice, however, that these statements are not helpful in any way in guiding policy. They are the equivalent of the beauty queen contestant's breathless goal of “world peace”. It sounds nice but it is really no help. What you are more likely to get if you press is their wish to talk about the “issues” followed by a series of ad hominem personal attacks against the current most prominent Republican (Palin, then Bush, Rudy, and Newt and Reagan before her), inaccurate fairy tales about conservatives in general (they want to starve elderly, or they only care about the rich, etc). You see this all the time even here on Gather. Rather than respond to an argument or a criticism, the liberal response is often to name call, disparage somebody else and basically ignore the argument against them. You will not simply get a succinct set of goals or a philosophy from them.
Why not? The reason is twofold. First, if they were to state their real philosophy, the American people would not accept it. It apparently is a philosophy something like,”Weaken the evil American capitalistic state, control the means of production and finance (Marx said that), allow only “good” speech (means agreeable to democrats – doesn't mean free) and return to our socialist European roots”. Read on and you'll see why I say this. Second, their supposed wish to talk about the “issues” sounds thoughtful and mature but it really is an excuse that allows them to make 10 sec claims and/or accusations that (although false) require a 15 minute answer to refute properly. It also reflects their confidence that any misstep that they might make will be papered over by a willing and largely friendly press.
Now before all you open-mined, fair, and thoughtful Democratic supporters start attacking me personally, saying stuff about my mom, and throwing out those clever twisted names like McBush and Fauxnews, understand that I am not saying that all Democrats would say the above or even believe it. The regular guy on main street (whether Democrat or Republican) expects basically the same things from his elected representatives, that they follow the rules, be transparent, spend wisely and not be corrupt.
I AM saying that the leadership of the current Democratic party rarely behaves this way and does embrace the above radical philosophy although they are generally too cunning to say what they actually believe. They are similarly cunning at manipulating less sophisticated followers without revealing their true intentions.
We can view their positions (not specifically personal views or statements but generally supported broad and unchanging stances of the liberal democrats) of the last 30-40 years and see that a disturbing pattern emerges):
Energy
The Democrats have consistently refused to allow America to develop it's own national resources. This includes proven environmentally clean nuclear power as well as offshore and ANWR oil reserves. Name one other country that “chooses” to not develop it's own resources. They have used their “power to license” to stop private companies from making private capital available to increase US energy capabilities and create jobs. They choose to trumpet alternative energy pathways which have not established that they are mature enough to meet domestic needs. They have favored their “supposed” respect for the environment at the expense of the country's energy situation. There are very real national security implications of this misguided strategy.
Financial System and Markets
Our current financial crisis was absolutely seeded by the Democrats who steadfastly encouraged the awarding of mortgage loans to people who weren't really qualified based on race and class distinctions using the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) and their absolute unwillingness to reform Fannie Mae/ Freddie Mac regardless of how large they became or how many misstated financial reports they produced. The Bush administration warned Congress numerous times to take action but Democrats consistently blocked reforms. It seems Democrats were more interested in building constituencies among low income borrowers than in promoting sound lending practices and financial stability.
Defense
The Democratic zeal for cutting defense spending and their dismissive attitude toward most weapons system needs or external threats as being “overstated” is matched only by their willingness to distrust and malign our troops and in the case of Iraq to try and withdraw without winning. It seems they are not moved by the possibility of losing wars and the impact that would have on our terrorist opponents. I'm just glad this bunch of Democrats weren't around during the dark days of 1942.
Foreign Affairs
Democrats constantly refrain that we are treating others countries wrongly and they even make such statements about American errors or missteps when speaking on foreign soil. They then trumpet any negative statements from international leaders. Are they citizens of the world or of the U.S.?
Education
The Democrat's firm alliance with teacher's unions and an unwillingness to eliminate poor teachers, allow discipline in the classroom, or entertain educational alternatives such as school choice continues to insure a weak educational system. Is that good for our future?
Immigration
A constant nearly “open-border” position by Democrats has subordinated immigration laws, put additional health care demands on communities, increased crime and prison populations and associated costs, and used ineffective border security to boost the ability of Democrats to cultivate voters. Coupled with illegal voter registration drives by organizations like ACORN (from which multi-state investigations and convictions have resulted) the Democratic “respect” for the American voter and taxpayer can be seen as the sham as it is.
Culture
The left's arm-in-arm acceptance of Hollywood media comments and it's money is a tacit acceptance of the messages that these same media elites put in their songs and movies for export to the country and the rest of the world. These media celebrities consistently show a disrespect for the heartfelt religious beliefs of many Americans. Might their message of violence, free sex, nudity, homosexuality, and vulgarity bear any weight for why family-oriented societies worldwide turn up their nose at what the media tells them that the US “is” and wish that our ”influence” would diminish? The support by the left of the situation where US mothers abort over 1 Million babies every year (many for convenience) represents a coarseness that weakens the morality in the land.
Other areas such as the U.S. as lawsuit heaven, the outdated and failing Social Security system, and the complex and corrupt IRS tax code similarly weaken this country with unwavering democratic support but there is no time to discuss them now.
In each of the above critical areas, the Democratic party position puts the strength, future , and sovereignty of the United States at serious risk, and for what? The Democrats put party before country and cover it with a thin veneer of confusion unrevealed by a compliant media. They use misdirecting rhetoric to accuse the Republican of behaviors that they themselves are involved in. The Democrats zeal to in effect nationalize various industries and entities (banks, insurance, and even some discussion of oil companies) reflects their unabashed love affair with central planning and general loathing of free enterprise. They are trying to remake the country into something that we would hardly recognize (even though we defeated it during the Cold War).
That in a nutshell is the Democratic Play-Book. Weaken America every way that you can but pretend that you aren't and act with outrage if anybody calls you on it. I don't know why they do it, but they do.
Ask your democratic friends what their governing philosophy is. See what they say.
If you are a liberal democrat, what is your philosophy?
What do you think Nancy Pelosi's or Barack Obama's view is?
