People are still debating whether or not Michael Jackson, the world's biggest "King of Pop", really deserved the amount of attention and celebration he received upon his recent passing. Whether you believe he's good or bad, today's Michael Jackson memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was a clear display of just how much impact the pop star had on the lives of millions including athletes, singers, politicians, reverends, and most importantly, his fans around the world.
The televised Michael Jackson memorial service was well over an hour long and featured plenty of superstar appearances, speeches and performances.  Celebrities took front row seats for the event. Statements were read from the likes of Nelson Mandela and Diana Ross, unable to attend. People from past and present got on stage to honor the late Michael Jackson including NBA stars Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, as well as the Reverend Al Sharpton. Actress and musician Queen Latifah read a touching Maya Angelou Michael Jackson poem called "We Had Him", and Brooke Shields shared some of her heartfelt memories of her friend. Motown's Berry Gordy (man who signed Jackson 5) and singer Smokey Robinson also reminisced about the young Michael and how his musical talents were just starting to unfold before their amazed eyes.
The musical performances were covers of many of Michael's hits such as Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz performing "I'll Be There", a Jackson 5 classic. Other amazing performances were done by musicians John Mayer (Human Nature), Jennifer Hudson, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. Michael's own brother Jermaine performed MJ's all-time favorite song, a Charlie Chaplin song "Smile" (lyrics). The song was featured in the Charlie Chaplin B&W movie, "Modern Times" and promotes the idea of being cheerful in the face of sad times.
The event closed out with Michael's young daughter, Paris, making her first ever public statement, a teary declaration of her love for her late father. Michael Jackson, the entertainer, left a positive lasting mark on many people. All in all the event celebrated the all-time contributions of Michael Jackson to the world as we know it. His music broke down barriers for many and will continue to live on influencing future generations...

my thoughts.... enough already!
It was lovely service. Brooke Shields was really eloquent. The ending with his daughter was very sad.
I didn't watch it.
He had two really great albums; Off the Wall and Thriller. Everything after that got weaker and less accessible to fans. You really can't compare his fizzled career with artists who have stayyng power. He is definately not the king of pop (if there is such a person). Unfortunately, as time goes on, he will be remembered for all the bizarre things he did and not for his music.
I didn't watch it, I was at work. So far I have heard about it, but not seen any clips about it really.
I thought it was a beautiful tribute.
I had to work so I didnt get to see it,, but Im happy he got a nice memorial..... There are all different opinions about it,,but all that matters is the man can r.i.p now..!
I billion people were said to have watched. That's one in every 6 people gloablly.
Michael Jackson was a mucial genius. He choreographed original and incredible dance routines, wrote original music and lyrics and created the most trend setting music videos in history. The videos directed by John Landis and Martin Scorsese with Marlon Brando, Wesley Snipes and George Wendt were ground breaking.
Unlike one of the comments above I believe he'll be remembered for his creativity and gentleness, his compassion and love for life. That's apparent from the words spoken by the people that knew him best during the memorial. He is and always will be one of the greatest perfomers that ever lived and there's no question that he has a fan base that's unsurpassed in music history.
It was beautiful. no matter how anyone feels about Him, He was loved and will be missed. He has beautiful Children who will truly miss him.
GB His family.
