Grey's Anatomy has been moving towards making some changes this season, and we know get to see those changes in motion as Mercy West finally merges with Seattle Grace, and we see a bunch of new faces arrive at the hospital in this fifth episode of season six titled Invasion, and that is just what it feels like. Seattle Grace and Grey's Anatomy is taken over, and it starts with one of the new faces taking over George's cubby hole in the locker room. Meredith tries to pep up the troops with a moving speech that comes from an old movie, and everyone goes right to work to fight for surgeries. Yang is the only one that doesn't seem to have the drive to fight for her job and surgeries. She very much wants cardio or nothing. With no cardio guy, she has nothing to work towards and improve on in her area. She is having a difficult time, and she goes into that dark and twisty place with Meredith. When she loses another surgery that could have been hers, she finally breaks down. She thinks Owen is going overboard with trying not to favor her. She ends up spending time with Meredith in her bed watching television. The friendship these two have always amazes me.
The new faces aren't easy to deal with, but Callie also has her father to deal with as he brings in a priest to help her pray away the gay in her. This upsets her, but Arizona tries to get Callie to see her father's side. Something that Callie doesn't like. She does try to talk to her father, but it only turns into a small battle with Callie running off in tears when he tries to tell her she is going to hell for being the way she is. This breaks Callie down, but Arizona does her best to comfort her. Arizona also shares a moment of her own with Callie's father as she makes a moving speech about her own life and how her own father dealt with the revelation she was gay. He accepted her, even though she thought he wouldn't. She was still the same daughter he raised, and that was good enough for him. Her words seem to finally get through to him.
Our main patients this week include a man having an affair with a nineteen year old that angers her father, a woman getting kidney transplant, and some others that fill in things with the new staff, including a patient one of the doctors from Mercy West takes from Karev. However, Dr. Adamson manages to snatch the patient back from Karev and Hunt praises her find in the patient. Adamson could be wrong though, and Karev tries to catch this. This leads to an argument between the two. We can already see that these new doctors won't play fair. Another patient becomes Lexie's responsibility, a man that is accused of breaking in into someone's home. Somehow even handcuffed he manages to steal the notebook of one of the new doctors. Lexie keeps it, but she soom feels guilty.
Not all of the doctors look to be bad at first though. One of them makes friends with Izzie, but she so learns he was only being nice because he was using her. Even when he tries to apologize, she doesn't take it. However, she makes what could be a fatal error with her patient, and this new doc comes in and saves the day leaving Bailey to take the kidney she was going to be given, and then yell at Izzie like only she can. Once again, Izzie got too involved and it clouded her judgement. This leads her to being cut from the staff at Seattle Grace. Webber needs to give his first pre-made speech to her, and it is heartbreaking to watch. Following this, Izzie leaves a note for Alex and leaves him and the hospital. Yes, Katherine Heigl is leaving Grey's Anatomy, but she will be back.
Good news here is. We won't lose any time with Meredith Grey at all this season. Ellen Pompeo has already returned to the set following the birth of her baby, and she is back to work. With the scenes they shot of her before the baby's birth and her already back on set, we won't see any downtime for Grey at all. This is a good thing. Izzie's absence will be felt, but something tells me they will find a good way for her to make her return in November. Sweeps month is known for big returns. This episode was strong, and I enjoyed getting a look at our new cast members. It will be interesting to watch their transition continuing in the weeks to come. Check below for a scene from tonight's episode, and soon we will have a promo for next week's episode available as well. What do you think of tonight's episode?
