World’s Oldest Dog, Otto! (Photos)

The Guinness Book of World Record’s has recognized a new winner in the “oldest dog” category.  Otto is a dachshund-terrier mix and is currently 20 years and 8 months old.  The previous record holder, Chanel, recently passed away at the age of 21.  Chanel was also a dachshund mix, so apparently that breed is known for longevity.

Otto is doing well but suffers from a bit of arthritis, not bad when you consider that in dog years he’d be 145 years old.  Long live Otto!

I have known the families of a few dogs who were 20 and 21. I would guess that it is not as rare as it seems but that not many people attempt to be recognized as having the world's oldest dog. What I have found to be very interesting about these dogs is that they almost always have owners who feed special diets (homemade, raw or premium food supplemented by homemade or raw) and that they are people who don't believe in getting all the recommended vaccinations. It makes me wonder which, if either, makes the difference in the dog's lifespan.
