Nicholas Coke, Baby Without a Brain Turns One

Nicholas Coke was born with a rare genetic disease a few days before Christmas. The disease left him with only a brain stem and no brain but unlike others born with the disease who die within hours Coke has survived to turn one.

As happy as his family is at each new accomplishment, they are in constant worry of the inevitable day when he will pass away.

Ok so how does his body know to perform basic functions...like say breathing if he is lacking a brain?

Ok I don't want to like burst your bubble here, but there has to be some way his body knows how to perform the basic motor skills or he's hooked up to some machines that do it for him....there's no "God" about this case

That's pretty amazing, if terribly sad. Not to sound callous or anything, but what possible hope is there for him? Assuming he lives even a few more years, what will his life be like if he can't walk, talk, see, hear, think? At least the mother seems to realize that his time is limited and she is just trying to make the most of every day she has with him.

the motor functions are in the stem right? I feel more for the parents than for the baby in this case. Sadly I dont think the child knows much. but the Parents must be going through mental hell every day worrying. Stories like these make me feel blessed to have two very health children.

With no brain, it is only a body, kept alive for no good purpose.
The child is dead. Autonomic functions are not life, sorry.
I am a Dad, and hope I would do better in this situation.
This is sad, but futile.

Everyone has to do what is right for them, what they can live with for they rest of their lives. By the time I got here the video had been deleted. Too much for some? A fact of life for others.
The brain stem controls breathing and heart rate. There is a purpose for this childs life, all those around him know this. We are just bystanders with no real investment in this situation. We should wish them well and let that be all.
