In a well played, hard fought game, Oklahoma beat Stanford 31-27 to win the 2009 Sun Bowl. Ryan Broyles set a bowl record with three touchdown catches and Landry Jones passed for 416 yards to lead the Sooners past Heisman runner-up Toby Gerhart and the Cardinals. After trailing 24-17 at the half, Oklahoma scored 14 straight points to take control of the game. For the most part, the Sooner defense contained Gerhart who finished with a hard earned 133 yards.
Stanford's Tavita Pritchard, who threw three passes in four games this season, made his 20th career start because standout freshman Andrew Luck wasn't ready after surgery to repair a broken right index finger. Pritchard was 8 of 19 for 118 yards and struggled throughout, missing a handful of wide open receivers in big spots.
Oklahoma on the other hand did what they needed to do offensively and made every key first down they had too in order the secure the win once Stanford pulled within a field goal midway through the 4th quarter.
