Oklahoma City Public Schools closed for the remainder of the week due to freezing temperatures. Oklahoma City Public Schools closed because of icy cold temperatures and the large number of children who walk to school.Â
Oklahoma City public schools closed tomorrow took serious deliberation. According to KSBI-TV, Oklahoma Public School Superintendent Karl Springer stated, "This was not an easy decision to make. Our concern is about the safety of our students who walk to school or wait outside for buses. The majority of our students walk up to two miles to school each day; in this type of weather that is a life threatening trip that we don’t want our students to have to make.â€
Prior to making the decision Oklahoma City Public Schools closed, administration conferred with Medical Director of the Emergency Medical Services Authority, Jeffrey Goodloe, MD.
Goodloe stated, "Shutting down the largest school system in Oklahoma is a significant event. I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision; but from a medical concern standpoint, these types of temperatures are a significant medical risk. In reality, this weather event is probably more dangerous than a typical snow day. Just because there may not be significant precipitation doesn’t minimize the dangers of sub-freezing weather.â€
The announcement Oklahoma City Public Schools closed will be made through media news such as KSBI-TV, at OKCPS.org, through phone messaging and on Twitter and Facebook.Â
