The Port of Morehead City, NC has been evacuated as a precaution after three containers holding highly explosive materials were accidentally punctured. Morehead City is a major seaport that brings rubber and many chemicals into the United States.
The chemical, which also reportedly spilled out onto port property, has been identified as Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN). It's uses range from treatment of certain heart conditions to deliberate use as a plastic explosive.
An evacuation recommendation has been issued for the rest of the downtown Morehead City area, but it is not mandatory. Those who opt to stay are being asked to remain indoors and keep away from doors and windows.
