Stephen Howard Schafer, 38, was killed while kite surfing off of Stuart Beach, FL, which is a little over 100 miles north of Miami, on Wedensday. Â
The lifeguard on duty noticed a man in the water was in distress, hanging onto his board – acting out of the norm. The lifeguard paddled out to the surfer not realizing that Schafer was surrounded by sharks and had been bitten multiple times.Â
The lifeguard was able to tow Schafer back to shore on the rescue board, and administered CPR. Unfortunately Schafer could not be revived.
Martin County rescue teams don’t remember the last time they were called out on a fatal shark attack because shark attacks are so rare. Swimmers have been bitten by sharks off of the Florida waters but no fatal attacks since 2005.
The beaches will be opening back up tomorrow.
