Shark Attack In Florida - Surfer Killed! [Video]

This sounds like a scene right out of Jaws. Apparently, there was a shark attack in Florida yesterday at Stuart Beach. Surfer Stephen Howard Schaefer was atacked yesterday while in the water. Early conclusions say his death was the result of an attack by a group of young great whites, but this has yet to be confirmed.

He was taken to the Martin Memorial Medical Center where he later died. Apparently, this is was the first fatal shark attack in Martin County since records started being kept in 1882. The attack happened on Wednesday afternoon. A lifeguard on duty saw the man was in distress in the water and swam out to his location. It was then the surfer told him that he had been attacked by a shark. He had several bites on him, including one large bite measuring about 8-10 inches.

An investigation is being done now to determine just what bit Schaefer. This is a statement below from a local shark expert, George Burgess, on the attack: "Those are the species involved in the occasional nips off the east coast, especially in Volusia County, but they are not man-eaters. If, indeed, the gentleman yesterday was bitten by sharks, it's far more likely it was a larger species such as a bull or a tiger, or a white shark if it was in the area. The white shark is indeed in the area, or conceivably could be, but they are very irregular visitors.
