By now everyone's probably heard the tragic news of the Orlando SeaWorld trainer, Dawn Brancheau, who was drowned on Wednesday by Tilikum, the orca whale that she's trained for years. The horrific event happened in front of hundreds of visitors, many of whom are questioning whether they'll ever return to a marine park again. Questions have been rampant since the trainer's death. Why did it happen? Will it happen again? Will Tilikum perform again?
While no one has a definite answer, it seems that Tilikum does have a violent history - which is not surprising considering he's a KILLER whale. He's now responsible for three deaths in the past 2 decades. His former trainer was available for an interview on the Today Show today and discussed his sale of the orca to SeaWorld 13 years ago. As he understood it, the whale would only be used to sire other whales and not for entertainment. However, he does believe that what happened Wednesday was just a "playful act" by a whale with no pre-meditated motives. It's so sad that such a "playful act" can be such a tragic one but again, what can you expect?
Do you think it was a "playful act?" Better yet, do you think Tilikum should perform again?
