Lonesome George is a giant Pinta Island tortoise that was thought to be extinct until Lonesome George was found in 1971 by a ranger. There is a large monetary reward for anyone who can find another tortoise from the Galapagos Islands. They prefer a female for Lonesome George.
Pinta Island in the Galapagos was once filled with these giant tortoises, but they were killed over the years and efforts are underway to restore the area. Thirty nine tortoises were brought to Pinta Island, which is the northernmost island in the Galapagos.
See the video of here of Lonesome George. Conservationists and fisherman at odds over a balance. Fisherman held conservationists hostage and tortoises as well. The fishermen threatened to kill Lonesome George because they are angry at conservationists. Lonesome George won't mate with sub species. Lonesome George is reluctant and shy. The ladies tortoises have courted George, but George is not interested.
So poor George is trying to be killed by angry fisherman, and lady tortoises want his sperm. Poor George.
