Early this morning, on Tuesday, August 3rd, nine people were shot and killed at Hartford Distributors in Manchester, Connecticut. Several more were injured. The gunman, a warehouse worker for the company named Omar Thornton, had been accused of stealing from Hartford Distributors. According to MSNBC, Thornton, 34, had worked for the company for about two years and was on his way to a disciplinary hearing when he pulled out the gun. "The union was bringing him in to meet with the company to remedy the problem," another employee told the Hartford Courant. "He started shooting."
Hartford Distributors Inc. is a family owned beer and wine distributor, located about 10 miles east of Hartford. Steve Hollander, one of the family members that founded and owns Hartford Distributors, was shot in the neck. His is wounded, but survived. After shooting people both inside and outside of the building--reportedly during a shift change--Thornton turned the gun on himself when police approached and committed suicide.Â
In yet another shooting in the U.S., one has to wonder how we can prevent this from happening again and again. It is sad that this man felt so desperate and angry that he couldn't find any other solution to his troubles. What are the warning signs for something like this? Are there any? Or are we just not paying enough attention? Â
