An ultrasound picture of a 17-week old fetus from a currently unnamed woman may change abortion laws forever. The ultrasound is already being dubbed "LOLFetus."
The name "LOLFetus" stems from the widely popular internet phenomenon "LOLCats," which is basically pictures of cats smiling or making various expressions, with broken English interpretations of what they look like they're thinking underneath.
But LOLFetus has far more important scientific and political implications should it be proven that a fetus can actually smile and feel feelings at such an early stage of development.
According to Gawker.com, the doctor who made this possibly legendary discovery expresses his adoration the smiling of LOLFetus by stating, "This is a joyful expression of the humanity of the foetus. I have seen a foetus making a crying face at around 18 or 19 weeks, but not a nice smile. This is the earliest on record—it is just a delight."
That being said, if a baby can indeed experience happiness at 17 weeks, it could be implied that the fetus can experience pain as well - making a valid case to lower the upper abortion limit from 24 weeks.
Just to play Devil's Advocate, the ultrasound is fairly grainy, and one could say the LOLFetus isn't actually smiling, but just writhing around and the appearance of a "smile" is simply a fluke.
Kind of like the way people claim they see Jesus in everything from water droplets to french toast, people may be seeing a smile because they "want" to see a smile. These people are likely pro-life.
