DNA found on a mattress at a landfill Tuesday is being tested to see if it is that of missing North Carolina 10-year-old Zahra Baker. Authorities say Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, who is in jail, is now cooperating with investigators on the case.
Mattress Found at Landfill May Have Been Zahra Baker's
According to FOXNews, a mattress found at a landfill Tuesday may have been Zahra Baker's, and if so could contain DNA that will be helpful in the case.
"This mattress possessed DNA evidence that will be tested in the future to confirm if it is involved with this investigation," the Hickory Police Department said in a statement Tuesday.
Zahra Baker's stepmother, Elisa Baker, was arrested and charged with felony obstruction of justice, after admitting to writing a fake ransom note after Zahra's father reported her missing on October 9. Now the Hickory, North Carolina police department says Elisa Baker is being cooperative in the investigation.
Elisa Baker Now Cooperating in Zahra Baker Investigation
Major Clyde Deal, who is deputy police chief in Hickory, North Carolina, made the following statement to the media regarding Elisa Baker's cooperation in the Zahra Baker case.
"The woman has been talking with investigators after her lawyer approached police offering her help," he said.
Does this new development mean Elisa Baker has admitted to killing Zahra? Has she cooperated with police to find her remains in exchange for a lighter sentence? Or is Elisa Baker somehow implicating her husband and Zahra's father, Adam Baker, in the crime? Adam Baker was arrested Sunday morning at 3AM at an airport, where he claims he wasn't fleeing the state, but rather picking up a friend.
Despite the new details in this case, it doesn't look like 10-year-old Zahra Baker will be found alive. A bone cancer survivor, Zahra wore a prosthetic leg and two hearing aids. Family and friends said it was no secret that Elisa Baker was abusive toward Zahra. It sounds like this little girl endured way more than her share of suffering, during what was likely her very short time here on earth.

However I would risk my own safety and attempt to take a child like this into my own home....especially if I were a family member.
