Five lions kill a man who was taking a shower in a campsite in Zimbabwe. The tourist from Zimbabwe was fatally mauled by the pride of lions while he was taking a shower under a tree at Chitake Springs bush camp, which is near a nature reserve.

Very sad story! Even smaller wild cats can be dangerous. A couple of winters ago in Death Valley National Park, a lynx attacked a guest at the Death Valley Inn while she was sitting out by the pool. She survived, but it was a tramatic experience.

So if the economy in the country was good and the killing of these animals were made legal by the government, then the animals would not be aggressive? Just thinking about that last sentence. It should read "They are wild animals and they are unpredictable"....Apparently.

No doubt they're unpredictable. I personally don't buy that it is because of illegal poaching, but then I'm not actually there to see for myself.

Parks conservation in Zimbabwe isn't a priority under the current government. While the nation is in economic ruin, mismanagement of resources such as this one is as least partly to blame. Sadly, tourist dollars will only decrease as the news spreads.

it makes sense lions are more aggressive if the economys bad. poachers reduce the lions prey so they have to eat something

Seriously, how do lions know about the economy? I suppose the thinking is that poachers take the lions' regular food source leaving them searching for more.

Your right Kate, animals do not know about the state of a country's economy. Poaching has been around for 100's of years, and like here in the states its not the poor that do it, just the opposite. Lions will usually attack a human if it is sick (the lion), just like any sick or rabid animal it makes them more unpredictable. Kate, you wonder why the people fired their shots in the air, well so do I. This may be a sick animal that will attack again and they should have shot it. Humans are also easy prey for the lion. killing hundreds over the past decades.

I believe the point here is poachers are driving the animals to different areas, via chasing them in jeeps. When in a new area the animal has to look for new food source, IE this man.

So yes poaching bad - leave them and their habit alone and you'd see a lot less of this!

bingo! i grew up in a poor city right here in america. i've heard stories of what tourists would pay for alligator parts. so yeah. bad ecomony = more poor guys hustling zebra parts to tourists. too bad for shower guy. lions are like poor people- they gotta eat too.

Usually these types of bush camps are fortified with a good fence as well as armed personnel. I wonder why this one wasn't.
