Chilean miner Edison Pena plans to run the New York City Marathon. He has been an avid runner, and running is what he did in the mine. The NYC Marathon begins Sunday November 7.
Pena ran through the mines during his 69 days of captivity trapped 2,300 feet underground after the mine he was working in collapsed. He ran with steel-toed boots that he cut down to the ankles, according to Fox News.
Pena was to
be invited as an honored guest, but this survivor wants to truly run the whole 26.2 miles in 6 hours, and the world will turn out to cheer him forward.Â
His survival in that collapsed mine is such a tribute to the human spirit, which is what the marathon is all about. So best wishes go to all the runners of the NYC Marathon, and special well wishes go to Edison Pena who is a real life hero.
