Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX for short) launched a rocket this past week. The test flight this past Wednesday, from Florida, contained a secret payload as the private rocket company launched its first space craft into orbit and successfully brought it back to the planet. What is even more interesting than the private launch of a space craft was the secret cargo that rocket contained.
The SpaceX flight both this past week was very successful is the capsule orbited the earth twice and then splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. The capsule and its contents were recovered and placed on a barge to be returned to California. So what were the contents of the experimental private rocket?
PayPal cofounder Elon Musk, who is the brainchild behind SpaceX, decided that a bit of humor should be included on the flight and placed a wheel of cheese on the maiden voyage of the spacecraft. Yes, you heard that right, the secret payload was a wheel of cheese.
The cheese, a round of le Brouere, was a nod to the British comedy team Monty Python. One might wonder if the taste of cheese had changed during the two laps that the Dragon Capsule took around the earth. No word has come from SpaceX about whether there was any effect had on the cheese, either from the launch, reentry or splash down. Perhaps Musk is planning to sell the wheel of cheese on EBay to help pay for his spaceship.
