Mark Madoff’s suicide was two-years after his father was arrested. The reason why Bernie Madoff may be barred from his son’s funeral is because furloughs for funerals of immediate family members are only available for inmates who have two or less years on their prison terms. The furloughs are also only granted when they are in the public interest. It seems like Bernie Madoff would be hard pressed to prove that it was in the public interest for him to attend Mark’s funeral. Also, he has many more than 2 years left.

The prison officials say that generally prisoners are told as soon as the facility learns of the death. If Bernie Madoff is aware of his son's suicide, it must have been a blow to him in prison.
