Bernie Madoff may be barred from his son Mark’s funeral. Mark Madoff committed suicide on Saturday in his downtown Manhattan, and now Bernie Madoff may be in his North Carolina prison where he is serving a 150 year sentence for his Ponzi scheme that defrauded people of billions.
Bernie Madoff May Be Barred From Mark's Funeral Due To Prison Rules
Mark Madoff’s suicide was two-years after his father was arrested. The reason why Bernie Madoff may be barred from his son’s funeral is because furloughs for funerals of immediate family members are only available for inmates who have two or less years on their prison terms. The furloughs are also only granted when they are in the public interest. It seems like Bernie Madoff would be hard pressed to prove that it was in the public interest for him to attend Mark’s funeral. Also, he has many more than 2 years left.
Would Bernie Madoff Funeral Furlough be in Public's Interest?
It’s not guaranteed that Madoff will be banned from the funeral, but it seems unlikely he would be granted even an emergency furlough because of the public interest in him. He could very well be a target while out for the funeral. Right now, there is no word on if Bernie Madoff even knows his son has died. The prison officials say that generally prisoners are told as soon as the facility learns of the death. If Bernie Madoff is aware of his son's suicide, it must have been a blow to him in prison.
Mark Madoff Suicide - Victim of Bernie Madoff's Crime?
Mark Madoff’s suicide is especially terrible because his two-year-old little boy Nicholas was actually asleep in a nearby room. What if nobody had stopped by the residence? How would a two year old be able to take care of himself? Mark Madoff was yet another victim of Bernie Madoff’s terrible crime. Do you think that Bernie Madoff should be barred from Mark Madoff’s funeral? If not, should he be granted an emergency furlough to attend?
