Margie Phelps, the attorney who won the fight for Westboro Baptist church's right to protest at funerals said that American Soldiers are worse than the Taliban. In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, she rationalized her views by stating that our soldiers are fighting for sinful reasons.
She said, "The American soldier is worse, because he pretends that he's fighting for liberty and a Christian nation. And there is not a bigger lie on the face of this earth today. Those soldiers are fighting for same-sex marriage and all the lesser included sins. And there is not an ounce of nobility in the United States military in this day. If you fear God, you won't put that uniform on."
The Supreme Court ruled in an 8-1 decision that the funeral protests are, indeed, protected. In handing down the ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts said that it is important "to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate."
Phelps went on to say that the Supreme Court Justices are most certainly going to Hell. And President Obama?
"The president is going to be king of the world before this is all said and done, and he is most likely the beast spoken of in the revelation."
Somehow, Margie Phelps manages to not only say the very people who are allowing her church to protest are going to Hell, but that the President of the United States is the beast mentioned in the Bible responsible for the downfall of all mankind.
As a result of the ruling, Phelps said Westboro plans to ramp up its protest schedule. Of course, this may have little effect in certain states, such as Massachusetts, where protestors are forbidden from coming to within 500 feet of a funeral.
