Self-styled pastor Terry Jones, maker of hatemongering speeches returned to Dearborn, MI today to protest his jailing last week. The Thomas More Institute has filed a suit against Dearborn for Mr. Jones's arrest on Good Friday.
Reverend Terry Jones seems determined that Dearborn, Michigan, is where he will make himself utterly infamous. He has returned, vowing to protest Dearborn's violation of his civil rights, as he claims happened Good Friday, when a local court jailed him for contempt of court. Jones insisted he would hold his protest of "radical Islam," in the median of a road in front of the largest mosque in Dearborn, without posting a "peace bond" as ordered by the court. He was careful to point out that he was not calling anyone in the Dearborn Isl?mic community "radical," nor was he protesting the mosque... he was simply protesting at the mosque, a distinction without a difference to the untrained eye (and probably the trained eye).
For this protest, Terry Jones has released a photo of him in jail and has said, "We invite every American who still believes in the freedom and rights that our Constitution guarantees to come and stand with us. We will be addressing the issues of jihad and sharia (Isl?mic law), our First Amendment rights... We will be calling for the ban of sharia law in America."
He did not explain what the relationship between the supposed violation of his first amendment rights and the need to ban sharia law in America might be. In this instance, Rev. Jones will be holding his protest in a designated protest area, which requires no permit or peace bond.
The Thomas More Institute, a very conservative Christian law firm, known for filing lawsuits where the firm decides Christians have been in some way persecuted, has filed an appeal against the verdict in the events of Good Friday. The firm is also threatening a federal Civil Rights Violation suit. Sadly, the First Amendment case against the City for shutting down the protest seems to be a good one. Ironically, Terry Jones's previously avowed position is to have the USA violate the second half of that Amendment as it pertains to Islam.
