While Pit Bulls are known as sometimes violent dogs that many groups try to get banned from cities, they originally served another purpose. These dogs were nanny dogs. Can you believe that? What changed so recently?
Why are Pit Bulls so feared today? In the past, they were very much known as family dogs. In fact, Helen Keller and Laura Ingalls Wilder also had this breed growing up. Even The Little Rascals had one in the form of Petey. Did breeding for dog fighting hurt this breed's reputation? It seems that this could be part of what changed with the breed.
In the past, these nanny dogs were trusted to watch children while parents were busy doing chores and things around the homestead. According to dog whisperer Cesar Millan, "Pit bulls get a bad rap because of irresponsible owners." It really is too bad that there are so many irresponsible owners who have caused these dogs to get such a bad rap.
There are obviously many bad news stories about Pit Bulls around. They suddenly turn and kill their owners or attack young children. Is there any way these one-time nanny dogs will be redeemed in the eyes of the public? Several things will probably have to change before that happens.

I believe some are much more tempermental and over protective than others. And because they are so strong, they do much more damage than any other dog.
As far as one attacking a stranger or anyone else for that matter, I would have to believe it had been beaten, abused, possibly used for fighting and or bate dogs. You've seen how vicious even the smallest of canines can be, but it's their strength that makes it so they can't really do that much damage.
I personally own a pit and he must think he's a small dog. He's always crawling in my lap and such. When I take him for walks and we see another person or even another dog or other animal, he never barks at them. He just wags his tail in hopes they will want to play.
