A teacher punches her student in the face and gets away with it? Sounds outrageous, doesn't it? This must be a clear cut case of child abuse. But don't judge so quickly.
Sandra Hadsock, a 64-year old teacher at Central High School in Brooksville, Florida, was arrested for child abuse for punching one of her students in the face in the classroom. Certainly striking a student should be grounds for criminal prosecution. However, another student captured the whole scene on a cell phone video. After viewing the video, the State Attorney's Office has decided to drop the charges against Hadsock. Why?
This was not a cute little grade-schooler who got slapped for misbehaving. It was a huge teenage boy who towered over the teacher. He came at her, shouting obscenities and using his size to intimidate her by backing her against the wall. It isn't clear from the video whether he actually touched her, but it was an extremely threatening situation. Far from a case of child abuse, the teacher appears to have struck the boy in self-defense. Who knows what would have happened if she hadn't hit him? School violence is a serious and growing concern for both teachers and students.
Watch the video here and see for yourself. What would you have done if you were in this teacher's place?
