The Long Island Serial Killer is among one of the many mysteries of the year 2011, and it's probably safe to say that the case will remain this way for a long time. Authorities in New York just can't seem to figure out what's going on and argue among themselves on whether or not there is a single murderer or more than one. What's more, they claim that Shannan Gilbert died accidentally and wasn't a victim of this alleged predator. Perhaps that's why the woman's family wants the FBI to take over the search for homicide cases of this caliber.
The disappearance (and now death) of Shannan Gilbert is what paved the way to discovering the burial ground belonging to the so-called Long Island Serial Killer. So why is it so easy for law enforcement in New York to rule her death an accident? It's been over a year, so how could they have even determined a real cause so quickly?
To make matter worse, there may be another serial killer on the loose, and this time the hunting grounds are in Detroit. Dubbed the "Backpage Killer," this alleged perp is picking off women who advertise sexual services on the site Backpage.com.
This is one notorious case, and possibly far too powerful to be deemed simply a mystery of 2011. In fact, it will most likely be remembered throughout history for many, many years to come. The West Memphis Three were finally freed this year, even though Damien Echols was on death row, by using a special plea agreement to bargain their freedom. It may not have been a pretty win, but it was a win, nonetheless. Forensic evidence cleared these three gentlemen who are most likely completely innocent of any wrongdoing.
The year 2012 begins tomorrow, and although these cases are mysterious now, they will remain so until they're either solved or simply out of the spotlight forever. That probably won't happen anytime soon, as many mysteries go. Here's to hoping the Long Island Serial Killer is apprehended, and the West Memphis Three can shed the notorious nickname and live their lives as individuals in a new world of freedom.
