Asteroid 2012 Da14 is heading towards Earth. Will it collide with the third rock from the sun in February 2013? This object's close vicinity has many people worried that it could cause a major problem for the planet (that is if the world doesn't end according to the Mayan calendar predictions).
The good news is that the 150 feet across Asteroid 2012 Da14 is not expected to hit Earth. Whew! It looks like that major, world ending possibility will be avoided much to the chagrin of those who love to cry that the sky is falling like Chicken Little.
Officials at the Near-Earth Object Program Office said, "Its orbit about the sun can bring it no closer to the Earth's surface than 3.2 Earth radii on February 15, 2013." That would be about 12,680 miles away from crashing into the third rock from the sun, so humankind can breathe a big sigh of relief over this good news.
Are you worried about a future asteroid hitting Earth? If it does happen, the effects could be devestating. That is likely what wiped out the dinosaurs, and something like that could very well wipe out humans.
