Shark Attack: Mom Saves Daughter in Florida While Surfing

I find it to be an ironic oxymoron and quite misleading for the title of this story to infer that the mother "saved" her daughter. In actuality, the daughter would not have been bitten in the first place nor would she have required being saved if proper parental supervision had been used by the mother.

I say this because, a teenage boy who had also been surfing had suffered a large gash in his leg from a shark attack only minutes before the daughter was attacked and just yards from where the mother and daughter were surfing.

More to the point of the mothers stupidity, the boy was actually receiving emergency medical attention on the beach at the time that the daughter was attacked and almost had her foot bitten off at the ankle. Yet, the mother did not do the adult parent thing and get herself and her daughter out of the water once the teenage boy had been attacked. Instead, she allowed her daughter to continue surfing and as a direct result of her mindless idiocy, her daughter was attacked and suffered serious injuries requiring emergency surgery to save the girls foot.

Hero, I think not, Idiot, most assurredly. Lack of adult parentage, absolutely.

In my opinion, the mother should have been legally charged by the police department with child neglect and endangerment resulting in a life threatening injury to a child under her care.

Katy reported this just like it was in the news story. Since the incidents were in two separate parts of the beach I would assume, and since they were out in the water, the mother would have no way of knowing what was going on with the beach... ie: what happened to the boy. I have spent a lot of time in the water in my lifetime, and you can't hear much while out in the water because of the waves hitting the sand. Since he was receiving medical attention, maybe they were surfing in, while this happened. You didn't mention you were there... and I find your judgment disturbing.

People do get hurt at the beach and unless she was looking in that area, she would have had no idea what the emergency was.

This does bring to light the fact that perhaps there should be some type of shark attack warning sounded when it happens so other beachgoers are aware that there has been an attack. It is likely that this duo had no idea.

a lot of shark attacks happen in florida nowadays. i guess the coast guard should be responsible enough.especially now that the surfing season just began.
