Earlier today it was reported that George Zimmerman will be charged in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. It has been nearly two months since the tragic incident, and still no justice has been served. Today, the case has taken a turn, because not only are Zimmerman's whereabouts known, but he has also turned himself in to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Maybe now Trayvon's family, and millions of others involved in the story, will see some progress towards justice.
On February 26th, Martin was walking home in his father's gated community when he was shot and killed by Zimmerman, in a claim of self-defence. Martin was carrying a bag of skittles, iced tea, and his cellphone; he was not armed. Since the teenager was killed there has been investigation into the events of that night, yet Zimmerman remained a free man--until today.
Zimmerman is now in custody, according to CNN legal analyst Mark NeJame. He also has a new lawyer, Mark O'Mara, because his former lawyers abandoned the case after they lost contact with him. NeJame stated that before he turned himself in Zimmerman was "out of the state of Florida, as I understand it, for his safety." Most likely because many people were very upset that George Zimmerman had not been arrested for Trayvon Martin's death, and his life was potentially at risk. For a good reason? Many might say yes. It seems that Zimmerman could have prevented the confrontation in the first place, but he chose not to, and now millions have their attention on him.
Zimmerman will be charged with 2nd-degree murder, and many believe that the verdict in the case should be "Guilty as charged." Others may believe that a 2nd-degree murder charge might not be enough. How would you feel about the shooting if it had been your 17-year-old?

While I have read about the "Stand Your Ground" law, I am by no means a legal scholar, but it seems to mean thsat if one feels threatened, one has the right to protect oneself.
This case is an example of why the law needs to be changed.
He will be tried by a jury of his peers. Let the process take place. If he is innocent he will walk free. If he is guilty he will be held accountable for his actions.
Most people want to work, but where are the good jobs?
I would not want to work for minimum wage at a job where my very intelligence is insulted.
I would rather my mothey went to help poor people than to wars oversees.
Not necessarily, many a jury has acquitted a person they thought guilty, but proof wasn't proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
I expect that we will now hear a chorus of like minded comments from the right wing- pity party for poor George Zimmerman, he did nothing wrong, he is being railroaded by black racists.
Well, I happen to be white, and I agree 100% with the charge brought by Special Prosecutor Angela Corey, who also happens to be white.
Don't worry, if the poor guy is convicted and some "brotha" rubs him out in the slammer, I'm sure you'd be jumping. You people make me sick.
I often said that these self haters are so far gone, not even God can help them. I don't doubt His powers at all, but ever since Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge, we have been given free will by Him along with the problems thereof. I guess if God cannot help you see, I hope that I can, if not, well, it's your choice, just leave me and other like myself out of it. It is an eternal conflict, I think we will get to the point to where we need to split peacefully with a handshake and a "good day," which I think is the best idea. Otherwise, the worse case scenario, Civil War Two. our views are 180 degrees out of phase and as the saying goes, "A divided house cannot stand."
Over to you.
Yup
but the philosophy you espouse is basically the idea of self hate for the country and Western Civ in general.
How did you come to that conclusion? I don't hate my country, I just don't live under the delusion that everything America does is right cause I happened to be born here.
It is the philosophy of White Guilt and Western Guilt.
What it is is the crazy idea that someone who murdered an unarmed kid should be punished. That has nothing to do with white guilt or western guilt.
I just wish that you and your people....
I have no "people." I am me, not a member of some hive mind.
....will see reality at least, or better, give up the self hate and love what you have and be proud of where you come from.
I actually don't hate myself, but I'm not particularly proud of alot the things my country does. I happened to be born in America, that's not some achievement to be proud of.
This does not mean putting others down, unless they do something wrong, but the love of oneself along with your heritage.
George Zimmerman did do something wrong. He murdered an unarmed teenager.
Yes, I'm proud to be White and Western. I'm proud to be part Jew as well.
Good for you. I just don't see the place I happened to be born or the skin color I happened to be born with as points of pride.
It's just progressivism creates more problems and ignores the rights and needs of the individual and it leads to things like progroms and the Holocaust.
Wrong. That is the conservative description of progressivism based on lies and fear mongering.
It's just the ones who are into self hate, knowingly or unknowingly get my anger up. If you want to take the car off the cliff, fine, but leave me out of it, I don't want to go with you.
I have no interest in taking a car off a cliff. Glad to hear you are not suicidal either.
I often said that these self haters are so far gone, not even God can help them.
There's somewhere where we can agree. I don't think god can help anyone, but only because I don't believe he exists.
our views are 180 degrees out of phase and as the saying goes, "A divided house cannot stand."
If you got down to what we actually believe instead of your misconceptions of my beliefs you might very well find we're not all that different. I believe a big part of the reason many people don't get along is that they have false ideas of what the other believes based on lies and fear mongering.
All the facts were out a long time ago.....
you mean the 'fact' (later disproved) of the 911 call where he said '...up to no good he looks black' when there was conversation in between those words, and the dispatcher asked if he was white, hispanic or black? THAT fact? or the
'fact' that he said effin 'coon', later proven to be wrong? or the 'fact' that after ordered not to folow, he chased martin down, later proven he did follow the 'suggestion' to not follow, was back at his truck when martin confronted him? or maybe the FACT that george had no injuries, when it was later proven he had gashes on the back of his head, and injury to his nose?? THOSE FACTS??? or how about the 'fact' he was never arrested, when the tape clearly showed him, getting out of the back of a police car, in handcuffs and taken into the police station - which can not be doine unless he was under arrest??? that fact? or maybe the "fact" that he was hiding and the police didnt know where he was - even tho they DID know, and he voluntarily turned himself in - which if her were fully guilty, and the p[olice couldnt find him, he would nto have done - THOSE FACTS??????????????
or maybe you mean all the facts that have not been released, that may convict him, and may not convict him - are those the facts that were "out a long time ago"????????
What it is is the crazy idea that someone who murdered an unarmed kid should be punished.
murdured? maybe - maybe not. but how arrogant of you! you know not a single shred more than any of the rest of us.
if he is guilty - i want him to fry.
but i dont know, and you dont know - unless you were there crouching, and hiding in the bushes and saw it all, and are too much of a coward to come forward.
you have him already tried and convicted in your little mind - what a sick huiman being that takes.
George Zimmerman did do something wrong. He murdered an unarmed teenager.
the arrogant, obnoxious, ignorance in that comment is so obtuse, and disingenuous ......... do you speak in public like that?
if you do .......does anyone on the face of the earth believe a single thing you say?
Hm, let's see. Maybe the fact that George Zimmerman admitted to shooting him, claimed self defense, but his victim had no weapons of any kind on him unless you wish to claim that he planned on stoning Zimmerman to death with skittles.
And yes, I am proud of what my country did and also Western Civ as well.
Good for you.
We need to bring back that pride.
Why? Why should anyone feel pride for where they happened to be born? It's not an accomplishment, it's just where we happened to be born.
I'm afraid we will have to disagree and remain adversaries and see who wins out.
Just because we disagree on some things I don't see that as a reason for us to be adversaries, but if that's the role you have cast me in fine. I genuinely hope you have a good life.
It seems that Zimmerman could have prevented the confrontation in the first place, but he chose not to, and now millions have their attention on him.
and how do you know that as a fact?
he claims, and one witness collaborates, that he "chose" to be heading back to his truck, and martin was on top of him, slamming his head into the concrete.
ohhhhhh - i get it - you think he said "oh please, oh please beat my head on the concrete, and try to kill me, because i hate you so much, and i want to kill you!"
now - whose story is right? no idea ....... yet ............ but to claim he "choose" that, is an irresponsible, immature, ignorant comment to make.
If you think I'm irresponsible, immature, and ignorant, then please do me a favor and don't burden yourself with reading my articles. I'm just a 23-year-old gaining some experience in freelance writing and I don't feel that I need to be personally attached by you...and the correct form of the verb is "chose."
There is no proof of that, & that's why you "people" are not taken seriously, because you make stuff up, or you read made up stuff and run with it.
@ Lauren, my point in many posts on this site~they can't disagree without hurling insults, and they're the first to whine when some people respond in kind. The fact that you had to correct his grammar should tell you what you're dealing with...
if you are simply ?just a 23-year-old gaining some experience in freelance writing learn that if you are not citing absolute facts, then you are writing fiction.
as a member of the neighborhood watch,m where there had been a fair amount of crime, he saw an unkown person - that in his opinion seemingly was wandering around in the rain. so it was his duty, to see what was up.
and he was returning to his vehicle, reportedly, when martin atacked him - is that true? i dont know - and neither do you.
hence my point - presenting it all as absolute fact, is indeed a comment that is irresponsible, immature, and ignorant.
and please note, i did not attack you at all - i merely pointed out the problem and the qualities, of the comment. i am sure you personally are nonne of those things. we many times. all make comments that are outside of our own charactor, when writing, to try to make a point.
oh =- and thankk you OH so very much - for you and august deciding that i must be an ignorant fool, and a defender for zimmerman (when i am not).
i am oh-so-very=-sorry, my muscle disease, and severe arthritis interfere with my self-taught typing skills, and it is apparantly so offensive to you both.
and august knows this about me - she has been told repeatedly, yet she felt a need to critize me personally, because of a double letter - and you jumped right in.
so very understanding and compassionate of you both.
i specifically critique the nature of a comment, and you besmear my very charactor, based on a physical ailment.
do you also laugh at kids that have a limp, or a speech impediment?
do you think an infirmity is reason for ridecule?
is it a real funny joke to maje fun of people with missing digits? or a heart disease, or a stroke?
august should especially be ashamed of her comment, since she should have known - you simply agreed,m because it suited your purpose, and you had not the first shred of decency to wonder WHY that error was made.
i pray people will treat you better than that, when you are old and diseased.
As for your attempt at making me feel like I'm some sort of terrible person, I'm always very saddened when I see people with disabilities discriminated against. As well as anyone discriminated against because of any difference. It's very upsetting that we still live in a country where hate is present simply because everyone is not exactly the same.
I was only correcting you because you called me ignorant (yes, by calling my comment irresponsible, immature, and ignorant, you are in turn calling me those things) and I didn't want you to look like a hypocrite. It's also very interesting that there are very few mistakes in your previous comments, but this one was just riddled with double letters and misspellings, as if you were trying harder to make me feel guilty for pointing out your grammatical error; which I don't feel guilty at all because you are flat out rude. I'm sorry that you have ailments, but that is no reason to talk to people like you do. Everyone has problems; some worse than others.
Thank you for your prayers though, and may you find time in things other than attacking people via the internet, instead of just expressing your opinions in a rational way. I'm finished with this conversation and I won't be reading any response you may post, because I shouldn't be getting upset over something someone said in a comment on a website; that would be immature.
anytime a person presents something AS fact, that means there is a duty to make sure it is factual.
if you want to state opinion - state it as opinion - you made declarative statements - you didnt say that "in your opinion he choose to .........".
has no one ever said to you - 'that was a stupid thing to say' or 'tiy are smater than that'? get a grip and grow up - i in no way called YOU ingnorant, i speicifically said the comment is.
plus, who the hell are you to correct me?
now, not that it is any of your business, but some days are worse than others, and some hours are worse than others, because i take meds for my problems more than once a day - as they wear off - my fingers get worse.
the real problem, is someone jumped in and made comments, that would try to make me seem stupid, based on my typing, and you just couldnt wait to agree. it never crossed your mind that someone who would correct your biased comments. might be just as, or more, intelligent than you - HAS to be an idiot if they disagree right?
dont know how long you have been on gather, but yes - it is a second-hand news source, as well as an opinion source. and it includes a very large body of fiction writing, poetry etc.
the problem with comments here is, you stated it as factual news, when NO one knows for sure.
oh - and by the way? i think zimmerman is probably guilty in one way or another - but we do not really know that yet do we.
so - it is your post, read this, dont read it - i really dont care. i simply hate to see speculation and opinion stated as absolutes.
people on both sides carrying on about what the 'facts' are, when none of us know yet.
people are so fast to judge, i guess to make themselves feel superior. then if the real facts come in and they are wrong - then what?
i learned over 50 years ago, to not be so hasty to decide on things.
