Will George Zimmerman be safe once he's released from jail? His defense seems to think he won't be, and probably for good reason. He gunned down 17-year-old Trayvon Martin claiming it was done in self-defense, but it's been widely speculated that this could have been a race-targeted crime. Zimmerman has garnered the same kind of notoriety as tot mom Casey Anthony, and if her case has shown anything it's that public pariahs of this caliber are seldom safe out on their own.
There are bounties out on Zimmerman's head, which should be investigated and stopped as well, but they are still existent and that puts him in danger. He also faces the threat of friends and family members of the slain teen getting even, even if he did offer a half-assed apology to Trayvon's mother. However, the biggest threat to his safety is the national public who now know that he is being released from jail and it's widely believed that justice is not being served properly, which isn't that new in the state of Florida.
George Zimmerman may have apologized for shooting Trayvon Martin, but in a way he was making things worse for himself. Why did he apologize? If this was in self-defense and he was totally in the right, legally he shouldn't apologize. This has left him open to a pretty strong prosecution, if they are opportunists. He said he didn't know that Trayvon was the age he was at the time of the shooting, but then he said something that made him look even worse.
He said he didn't know whether or not Trayvon Martin was armed. That in and of itself should lead prosecutors to question why on earth he discharged his weapon. This man was not a law enforcement officer and was told by dispatchers that he did not need to follow Trayvon. Instead of abiding by this request, he chose to follow the young man and gun him down. As for the injuries on the man's head, they do not look like they occurred in a scuffle in which his head was banged on the ground. There do not appear to be smudges, instead the blood just drizzles downward. Was Zimmerman attacked? Possibly, but was he in the right for shooting Trayvon?
Hopefully his defense figures out how to keep him safe, but his best bets are to take the Casey Anthony route and go deep incognito. And keep in mind that it is in no way acceptable to go after this man. Vigilante justice is absolutely unnecessary. This man will be tried in a court of law, and that's what he deserves.
