Fans of Zooey Deschanel and her singing (if there actually are any of the latter!) rejoice: the quirky brunette has been cast on Broadway to play the legendary Loretta Lynn!
In fact, the 77-year-old country icon cast Deschanel in the role herself, introducing her at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium stage Thursday night during the Opry Country Classics and welcoming her for a surprisingly on-key rendition of "Coal Miner's Daughter". That will, appropriately, be the name of the stage production as well, following in the footsteps of what was arguably Loretta Lynn's greatest hit, as well as the name of the film the show will be loosely based upon.
While there is no denying that Zooey Deschanel has a presence that is likely to translate perfectly to the stage, is she best suited to play Loretta Lynn? If you do not agree with the casting, who do you think could have played her better? Or, if you're part of Deschanel's cult-like fan following, do you think she'll be a natural on stage?
