Have you ever heard of a vegetarian shark? Apparently there is a killer out there that does not do so much killing. In fact, this shark prefers to eat vegetables instead of meat. This unusual fish is the world's first non-meat eating shark.
The unusual vegetarian shark is named Florence, and she is a nurse shark that measures about six-feet long. She has been a vegetarian since 2009 when she endured a surgery to remove a rusty hook from her jaw. Since then, she has not eaten meat and sticks completely to vegetables. Can you believe it? It sounds like Florence does not want to risk getting a hook stuck in her mouth again. Who would?
Florence lives in the Birmingham National Sea life Centre where she steals her vegetables from a sea turtle named Molokai. Believe it or not, but her handlers have to devise clever ways to get protein into her diet because she is completely off meat. They have resorted to hiding fish in her veggies.
Graham Burrows of the Sea life Centre said, "We're having to hide pieces of fish inside celery sticks, hollowed out cucumbers and between the leaves of lettuces to get her to eat them. And it has to be well hidden, because if she realises it's there, she'll ignore the offering and wait for the strictly vegetarian option."
Should these handlers be tricking this vegetarian shark into eating meat though? Is it possible that there is another reason she won't eat it? Perhaps they should try to get different sources of protein into her.
