Stephanie Decker is a true hero who has managed to defy the odds and take her first steps just two months after losing her legs. Stephanie made an appearance on the Ellen Show to talk about her progress and her miraculous story of survival. Her story will make you cry and serve as a reminder how precious life really is and how much is taken for granted everyday.
On March 2 of this year, Stephanie recognized a brutal storm brewing and took immediate action. She had the foresight to get her two children, ages 9 and 6, into the basement before the F-4 tornado hit. Thankfully, she quickly realized the basement alone was not going to be enough protection for her or the kids.
Stephanie wrapped her children in a blanket and threw her body over the top of them. As she watched the tornado rip her entire home from its foundation, she reveals how scared she really was that the tornado would end up killing her family. As the house tumbled on top and around her, Stephanie remained calm, even when the debris was crushing her.
Stephanie made a life-altering decision at that moment to stay on top of her children, instead of getting out of the way of the falling bricks and beams. Her selfless actions protected her children, who came out of the whole ordeal "without a scratch on them."
Unfortunately, their mother did not fare as well. Beams from the destroyed home crushed her legs, leaving her fighting for her own life. The hero mom explains how she refused to scream in pain for fear of frightening her children. Her son recognized the severity of the situation; and despite the carnage the tornado left behind, he bravely went for help. His actions ultimately saved his mother's life.
Stephanie Decker has made an amazing recovery and throughout it all, she has kept up her sense of humor. She tells Ellen DeGeneres that while she was being loaded into the ambulance following the accident, she joked with her young son, "There goes pedicures." What an amazing woman. Stephanie lost both of her legs, but is not letting that stop her from laughing or dancing.
