An Ohio waitress named Virginia Hopkins received an astonishing half million tax return from the IRS. She was expecting a check for $754, so when she received one for $434,712, she knew something wasn't right.
The Johnny's Downtown Restaurant waitress knew that she couldn't keep the money, but she did not know how to return it to Uncle Sam, who is clearly not that generous.
She actually took the check into work with her to show her surprised co-workers. Finally after some discussion, she decided to return the check in person to the IRS office in Cleveland, which seems like a great solution to this unusual problem.
Virginia Hopkins said, "Would you believe I had to give them a photo id to prove it was me before I could give it back? Otherwise they wouldn't even talk to me." That is pretty funny.
Unfortunately, she will never know why the error was made. Sadly, she is still waiting for her check for $754. Hopefully the IRS will expedite that refund considering the fact that Hopkins was so honest in returning the huge refund check.
Have you ever gotten the wrong refund from the IRS? If so, what did you do about it? How do you think you would feel if you opened a check for half a million dollars? It would be quite a shock no doubt.
Perhaps this honest waitress will get a just reward for returning the money immediately. It seems unlikely the IRS will reward her, but perhaps now that she is famous she will get more tips like the Houston waiter who recently received a $5,000 tip.
