Separation seems imminent for two giant turtles. Divorce is the word used to describe the sudden dislike each shares for the other after being a loving turtle couple for 115 whopping years in captivity. What caused the two reptiles to go their separate ways?
No one may ever know, but the female turtle, Bibi, seems to have initiated the break up by ripping off a chunk of the male turtle's shell. The two love turtles went from being together all the time to showing a huge hatred toward each other and, sadly, the male, Poldi, had to be relocated to prevent them from killing each other.
Bibi and Poldi have stood the test of time by staying together 36 years at an Austrian zoo and being together before that at a Switzerland zoo. They are both 115 years old and must know each other better than they know themselves. What have these two enormous and incredible creatures seen in their lifetimes? Obviously, they think they've seen too much as a couple.
It is safe to assume that no one will ever know what caused the sudden rift between these two giant turtles. 'Divorce' seems unavoidable now, even after failed attempts by experts to lure the two back together with games and aphrodisiacs. Bibi and Poldi didn't fall for any of it. According to the zoo boss, Helga Happ, there are no obvious answers.
"We get the feeling they can't stand the sight of each other anymore. But for no reason that anyone can discover they seem to have fallen out, they just can't stand each other."
Do you think Bibi and Poldi will kiss and make up to live out the rest of their really long lives together? Can true turtle love really last forever or at least 115 years?
