Cutting funding for food stamps has been the talk of politicians. Sadly they are not paying attention to the real consequences of reducing funding for the program. It won't just be the jobless or working poor and their children who go without, it will be soldiers and their families also. So, instead of increasing taxes, or even just getting rid of tax breaks, for the incredibly wealthy lets starve the soldiers instead! Makes great sense.
When over $100 million worth of federal food aid is spent on military bases, it becomes obvious that the first line of defense is living in poverty. While the military includes housing allowances and tax advantages into their calculation of how much soldiers make each year, the fact that their paychecks are below the poverty line means they qualify for help purchasing food. If congress takes away that help, the second biggest stressor for corporals on down, finances, becomes that much greater. How is an active duty soldier expected to remain focused and alert while worrying about whether his children back home have food on the table?
Congress has decided there is wide-spread abuse and fraud when it comes to food stamps due in large part to sensational headlines of lottery winners still being given help with food. Sadly they seem to forget that for every one person who is defrauding the system there are thousands who are abiding by the rules and just need a helping hand. Congress needs to go back to the drawing board because there is no reason the people expected to lay their life down for our country should be at risk of not being able to feed their families. By the way Senator Jeff Sessions, it is not immoral to make sure children have food on the table each evening. Seems one republican from Alabama needs to get his head examined.
