There is something about the unknown that intrigues people. Among some of the most popular mysterious things that captivate the publics imagination are aliens, bigfoot, vampires, and ghosts. However, a recent "documentary" which aired on the Animal Planet focused on mermaids and, after watching the show, a lot of people are quite confused! So much so, that "mermaid body found" has been a top trending search on Google all day!
The show in question focused on the idea that the mythical creatures exist. The show spun a very interesting (but still, very fictional) story about the find of a supposed mermaid body and the secret government cover up because, when it comes to cool, creatures of fantasy, everyone knows that they are indeed real and the government is covering up the proof.
In response to calm the public's curiosity the The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) spoke out about mermaids saying about their supposed existence, "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found."
Of course, mermaid sightings were very popular in ancient times, but it is believed that many of these sightings were mistaking manatees for the sirens. That's right, the sea cow was some how confused with a slender beautiful woman with flowing hair and a fish tail. Obviously, many accounts back in the day were also exaggerated, so perhaps that is why these stories became so common.
While it isn't uncommon for so many people to be interested in watching a show like Mermaids: The Body Found, one has to wonder why so many people would mistake it for fact. Not only was it created as a work of fiction, but don't you think if an actual body of an "aquatic humanoid" were found, it would make front page news? It seems as though that, even if it wasn't their intent, the Animal Planet pulled a modern-day P.T Barnum (pictured is the infamous "Fiji mermaid") and tricked a lot of people into thinking these creatures were real.
