Police in Philadelphia are appealing to the public for help in identifying a child abductor who nearly succeeded in kidnapping a young girl. The chilling episode was caught on a surveillance camera and broadcast on ABC News.
In the video, a young girl and a toddler are walking down a deserted side street in a Philadelphia neighborhood. Suddenly, a man jumps out of a white car and grabs the girl. As she bravely fights him off, the man falls to the ground. Luckily, he was spooked and ran away.

Police believe the shrieks of the boy scared the man, who can be seen driving away on a different surveillance camera on the street.
It's hard to make out the features of this gutless child abductor and the license plate on his white car is unreadable. But police are hoping someone might recognize the would-be kidnapper or the vehicle and contact authorities.
The video was posted to Facebook and Twitter and authorities hope to generate some leads which will end in the capture of this lunatic. Anyone who has information is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police immediately.
Debates about invasion of privacy issues as a result of surveillance cameras monitoring public spaces seem to evaporate when it's realized how instrumental they can be in cases like this.
Hopefully this madman will be caught soon.
