The news of the Batman theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado horrified people as they woke up to the headlines this morning. Now, the shooting has actually led to the cancellation of the Paris première of the Dark Knight Rises. This has led people to wonder if U.S. theaters should cancel showings of the highly anticipated movie.
This is a delicate situation. Of course the concern is that there will be copycats of the Batman theater shooting. The very first reaction to these situations is fear, and rightly so. It is scary for a masked gunman to attack a midnight showing of a movie. However, another reaction to this type of attack is to not live your life in fear. The people who were in the theater are going to struggle with this type of fear for weeks, months, and years.
The cast of Dark Knight Rises is in Paris, but their red carpet premiere as well as scheduled interviews with the cast. This move by Warner Bros. was out of respect for the victims.
Warner Bros. released a statement about the shooting in Aurora, Colorado that said, "Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."
