That'a exactly what those cultist fanatics hope will happen. They keep trying to provoke someone, anyone, into assaulting one of their group for both the media publicity it would generate for the WBC and the disruption it would create for the event which they are protesting as well as to prove their point, that we are all sinners against their God.

There is no doubt that the members of WBC are first class nuts cases, but in some ways, they are also sly nut cases, having a purpose and an agenda of creating total chaos for their own self serving benefit.

Todate, that has not happened at any of their rallies, demonstrations and/or protest. Hopefully it never will, they don't deserve the effort it would take to deck one of them with a solid punch to the jaw. The only thing they deserve is total ostracizing and excommunication by society.

One of the woman is a lawyer so she does know what to do as far as legally... They are a bunch of sick and twisted people...Christians dont act like this... I think they are doing more of the devils work than Gods and using Gods name to give the christians a bad name...

I know - I have read about them. I really believe her dad sent her to school to study law - he, too, was a lawyer but cannot practice now. Wonder how long before she is barred, too? Yes, it is very sad when someone does evil in the name of God.

jeanne, I think this whole family has some deep rooted issues... its to bad that there are some in this country that has no respect... I often think of the families who lost a loved one and should be allowed to mourn without this crazy bunch holding signs and making big fools of themselves... Do they really think they will get to Heaven with their hearts filled with so much hatred?

Well Lebrea... I know that alot of people that claim to be christians are not the kind of christians that I would want to be .... I also, know that we are all human and far from being perfect, we all make mistakes... having said that though... I cannot see a for real christian wanting to cause grief at the funeral of a soldier. That soldier may of went to war and may of killed but it is not for this bunch of phonies to judge anyone...Kindness, compassion , helping others, thats my take on a real christian...

I think - if I may speak on this matter, vickey w. - her take is simply a "real" Christian is the type of Christian she understand a Christian to be, i.e., non-judgmental, loving, kind, giving, forgiving - spreading the message of God's love, not one of hate. The WEstboro church spreads hate. This goes against the basic tenets of Christianity as we know it.

Jesus spelled it out many times that we are love our enemies. If we are Christian, and followers of Jesus.... we would be doing what he said.

Matthew 5:43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighborh and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you: Love your enemiesi and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

We are to be ambassadors... for Jesus and I don't think the WBC is loving nor do I think they are acting as ambassadors for Jesus.. so

2 Corinthians 5 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
My understanding is that Jesus came with a message of love and through him we can be reconciled with God.... and he said not to judge too. Nothing that I have heard the WBC do falls in this category...

Matthew 7 1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again

You can call your self anything you want but it doesn't mean you are.
I so disagree with what the WBC does and I am so glad many people realize they are not behaving very Christ like.

Kinda like calling yourself a bowler and you show up to the bowling alley with a beach ball... I don't think you will be allowed to throw your beach ball down the alley and have it bounce all over into other peoples alleys. Yes it is a ball, yes you bowl with a ball... but if you want to be a bowler you need to learn about bowling.... first.

sure. Aren't we all judgmental to some degree or another? Are you not being judgmental if deciding another is being judgmental? I would also say "deciding" one is not acting in a Christian manner is rather easy when one is spreading hate - through one's words and actions. Perhaps it is a matter of semantics - would it be less judgmental to say "They do not appear to be acting very Christian like when all we hear are messages that are destructive" rather than "They are not acting very Christian like..."?

Keep in mind, Scott H. - by asking me that question you've just asked me to make a judgment call.

Most of them are lawyers, including Phred Phelps, himself! Before he went on his manic phase and got mad at Topeka for not cleaning up a park close to his house, he was a civil rights attorney and a baptist minister. I can understand his disillusionment with Kansas, as Kansas is not very generous with civil rights, and one who does not conform must fight for every bit of respect one gets, and watching his clients get shafted time and time again must have been annoying.......but dang! When the incident with Gage Park not being cleaned up and maintained to his like came up, couldn't he have run for City Counsel and initiated a clean-up drive himself, rather than going on a hate campaign?

Ya think? lol...

This leads one to ponder... what if the gunman had walked into Westboro church and wasted half the congregation? Since most of this church is related in one way or another, the loss would have been horrible for those who survived.

From there, we are left with two questions:

1. Would the survivors have thanked God for the killer?
2. Would the nation have sympathized with the losses?

Talk about a two-edged sword!

'Why' has no one done this kind of thing to Westboro?

I tend to think that we are not inherently inclined to this kind of behavior. Yes, we make wars... mostly needless ones for fun and profit. We also form into mobs... anarchists, street gangs, etc. and commit pointless acts of violence but, we are still not mass murderers at heart.

This is why I feel we should claim higher ground to see over the the gun issue but then also bend beneath it to look under our social/cultural rug to see what else is there. We are creating monsters and if we don't find out the mechanism that churns them out... we'll have to outlaw sticks and stones and fight them off with our toenails.

J. wright - Not quite sure where you are going with this comment. So far as I can tell (correct me if I am wrong) the only people actually coming close to 'promoting' mass murder here were those at Westboro. In their case, they were more celebrating it than promoting it but... that's not any improvement.

From there, I have reread every comment, including my own and can find no such promotion in any way, shape or form. Am I missing something?

Michael Moore looked him up once, back in 1999. He took a bunch of people in a pink trailer, to promote gay rights.

j.wright - If I may, I was only noting the most very, very obvious. I mean, it is easy to celebrate death when it doesn't come home close to you. All this faith in a god that hates so much... might wilt under the glare of such an event if it was they, not others, doing the hurting and weeping and bleeding.

I feel no compulsion to avoid speaking to this subject because it is, very much in the wild for anyone to discover. I do apologize if my words somehow struck you as wrong... but I must stand by them nonetheless.

Mike - what you asked was a theoretical question - no more, no less. No one was compelled to answer. I saw nothing wrong with it. How many can honestly say that thought hasn't crossed their minds? Horrific as it is. Is the same thing as walking a mile in another's shoes.

Both the paranoid schizophrenic shooter AND Westboro Baptist Church need less attention, not more. Suppose no one even noticed them when they protested? That would be a much more effective way of getting rid of them.

The problem with that is that they won't go away. If we ignore them, they'll get louder until we can't ignore them any longer. I've dealt with people like this. They don't like being ignored.

You summed it up in your last sentence: They don't like being ignored. The other thing they do is provoke everyone in sight until someone either throws something at them or otherwise violates a law. Then they sue, and win. That's how they pay the bills at their church. Phred Phelps's message does not attract a lot of parishoners who are actually there every Sunday when the collection plate gets passed around.

Yup, and I think it's mostly just family and people crazy enough to marry into it.

The church was founded in 1955 and presently the WBC is thought to have 48 members, 30 of which are direct members of the Fred Phelps Sr. family. There are 16 members of the church who married into the family, with 2 members, just idiots wanting to be apart of the insanity of the congregation.


FEI, believe it or not, it was documented; That the Kansas Order of the Ku Klux Klan publically disavowed any support for the WBC in 2011, issuing the statement that the KKK heirarchy had determined the WBC to be a "Hatemongering group"

Now I don't care who you are, when the KKK labels your group as being hate mongers, Man, that has got to hurt.

I heard about that recently, Scott H. - and that is just weird! Of course, I believe recently the KKK is trying to do some damage control on their image. This is a fairly effective way of attempting to do so.

Does anyone know Fred's rationale this time? With Sage Moonblood's memorial he claimed to be protesting Sylvesters' promiscuity. With the military funerals he was protesting non-condemnation of gay folk. I can't see any link between Batman, white on white crime, midnight movies and his crusade against promiscuity or gay folk this time. Do you suppose it's not so much a protest as a celebration that more Americans that don't share his views have died? Anyone know?

So apparently their new strategy is to highly publicize their arrival and then not show up in order to cost municipalities for the extra reinforcements and to inconvenience those who are showing up to serve as shields. They apparently see this as a hilarious gag and an effective torment tool.

Why are we still feeding these trolls attention? If it stopped, I wonder if they would too. Doubtful, but they don't need attention anyway.

Trouble is - they want the attention and would not go away. It's highly possible they could and would do much worse than just picket. Even if someone called their bluff - that just might be the time they aren't bluffing.

That's always a possibility but I don't think it would justify continuing to feed them attention. I'm not sure they care a lot about attention; they probably actually think they are doing what is right. They may like attention but it might not be the most important thing to them.
