New details about the murder of 19-year-old Carina Saunders, whose dismembered body was discovered stuffed into a duffel bag in Oklahoma City last October, have come to light. It seems that her death was even more violent than previously believed. A witness to the gruesome killing revealed that Saunders was still alive when alleged attackers, Luis Ruiz and Jimmy Massey, sawed off her left foot.
This alarming information was included in the probable cause affidavit filed with Luis Ruiz's charges Monday in the Oklahoma County District Court. In this affidavit, Michelle Hanshaw claimed to have witnessed the murder and provided a chilling account of events.
Hanshaw said that she and Saunders arrived at the scene of the crime together, and Ruiz began beating Carina, then tied her up with twine. Then, he allegedly drug the young woman upstairs and spread her across a table. Ruiz subsequently sawed off Saunders left foot, then began on the right foot until the saw broke. According to Hanshaw, Carina Saunders was still alive as Ruiz began to dismember her. All of this was reportedly done to scare others into complying with a drug and human trafficking ring headed by Luis Ruiz and Jimmy Massey.
Although murder in any manner is a horrific thing, the way in which Saunders was killed is especially unsettling. The agony of her last moments is inconceivable and makes you wonder how anyone could inflict such torture on another human being. If this account of events is true, hopefully, justice will be swift and as merciless as Carina's murder.
