The NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to "lock up" baby formula, but some think he may need to be locked up instead if he doesn't quit with the strange initiatives he keeps proposing.
"There are a lot of situations, unfortunately, where mothers cannot breastfeed, and they need a good alternative," Dr. Edward Mailloux from Sanford Health in South Dakota pointed out.
Yet despite that obvious fact, Bloomberg thinks mothers shouldn't be given the option to choose whether to breastfeed or not and wants New York City hospitals to basically force them into only one option: breastfeeding.
And they will be following his new health initiative come September, when baby formula will be treated like a regulated substance, requiring medical approval for it to be administered in hospital settings after a child's birth.
Is NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg crazy? Does he need a straight jacket and a trip to the funny farm? And where are the feminists who always decry any effort by government officials to tamper with their other rights—like abortion on demand?
MSN reported that one psychologist has this prescription for the NYC mayor. "Let's make certain the choice to breast feed or bottle-feed stays with the person who deserves to make it—the mom."
Psychologist Diana Sanford is right, and she also emphasizes that a "one-size-fits-all" mentality is the wrong approach and that New York City hospitals should focus on ensuring that mothers have a choice—and that the hospital should respect it.
Mayor Bloomberg seems to have forgotten that important point about a woman's right to choose. And it will be interesting to see if the city's female residents show him the error of his way on the baby formula health initiative come the next election.
