The tragic passing of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has been greeted by most with sadness and respect; but within minutes of his death being announced, a predictable stream of nasty tweets appeared.
Deshmukh (the father of Bollywood star Riteish Deshmukh) was in critical condition and awaiting a liver transplant. A young man who had been killed in an auto accident was the intended donor but at the last-minute his family declined to allow the donation of his organs, effectively sentencing Deshmukh to death. Doctors at the Chennai hospital where Deshmukh was being treated attempted to convince the family to change their minds but the young man died of a heart attack before they could do so. Vilasrao Deshmukh died very shortly after.
The former CM was a contentious figure, hailed for his dream to turn Mumbai into a new Shanghai but also derided by detractors as corrupt. "#RIPVilasrao" began trending on Twitter just minutes after news of his death became known, but not all of the messages were positive:
RIP vilas rao deshmukh is trending worldwide..too bad he never trended for good reasons..— Harshad Joshi (@HJ91) August 14, 2012
