The 50 Shades of Grey novel is basically a fairytale with BDSM and a Prince Charming with some major issues. However, a real-life Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele didn't get their happy ending.
Just like Christian, 53-year-old Manhattan investment banker Edward Sonderling has embraced a life of whips, chains, and sex slaves. And just like Anastasia Steele, the dominant's 27-year-old submissive Frankie Santiago fell hard for her master.
But things took an ugly turn when Sonderling (pictured on the right) got tired of his living toy and decided to replace her.
According to the New York Post, Santiago didn't take it too well when she found out that Sonderling was training a replacement sex slave, and suddenly she wasn't so submissive anymore—she busted his window shield and started sending him threatening texts.
Frankie Santiago then confronted Edward Sonderling in his apartment, where she grabbed a kitchen knife and said that she was going to kill herself. Sonderling managed to eventually get Santiago outside and into his car, and she was later charged with stalking, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment. So far her inner goddess hasn't commented on the charges.
So obviously the real world of BDSM isn't quite like 50 Shades of Grey, although this story is a bit reminiscent of one of the scenes in the second book of the series. Be forewarned—the next paragraph contain spoilers.
In 50 Shades Darker, Anastasia Steele has a run-in with one of Christian Grey's previous submissives named Leila. The jealous girl breaks into Ana's apartment and confronts her with a gun. Just like Sonderling, Christian manages to control his old sex slave long enough to prevent a tragedy.
Hopefully American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has seen this story. He was hoping to write the screenplay for the 50 Shades movie, but recently said he is now out of the running for the job. Perhaps he can write a screenplay for his own movie based on this true story, and it can showcase the darker side of BDSM (E.L. James can't claim she owns the genre—the world of sex and spankings was also explored in the movie Secretary).
Hopefully this real-life 50 Shades story will discourage women from looking for real-life Christians.
