Information surfaced in June, claiming a Chambers, Nebraska couple and the man's brother were involved in the disappearance of Jill Cutshall, who disappeared from Norfolk, NE in 1987. It's good to know that, even with the length of time that's passed, new leads are still coming in.
The information came in the form of diary entries, claiming they found Jill wandering around, naked, on the highway outside of town. This makes sense, as her clothes were found the following year at Wood Duck Wildlife Refuge, between Norfolk and Stanton. The diary also claims that Jill was taken back to Chambers and held in a cave with three other women, 12-year-old Sharon Bald Eagle, Karen Weeks, and Cathy Beard, where she was raped and tortured by the two men, before dying in childbirth.
The woman who allegedly wrote the diary, Jean Backus, is 87 years old. Her husband, Wetzel, and his brother, Chauncey died some time ago.
This information has been dismissed as a hoax, primarily because it was anonymously sent to the mother of a man currently being held for the murder of Cathy Beard, John Oldson. Beard's body was the only one of the four missing women whose was found, in a pasture near Ord. The diary also says the cave was covered after the death of one of the brothers, so that the bodies would never be found. Authorities claim to have searched every inch of the ranch and found nothing leading them to believe the diary entries are factual, but the information included makes one wonder. The details, intermixed with talk about cows and crops, just seems so real.
There is another man who is hoping these diary pages can be proven true: David Phelps. He was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping Jill with intent to sexually assault her. He still maintains his innocence, which would be proven, if the diary entries were found true.
Did authorities excavate the property? The information says the women were in a cave that had been covered, so wouldn't that mean they should be looking underground?
It is a fantastic story. If the diary is not a complete fabrication, created only to clear Oldson of Beard's murder, could it be the truth? Who lies in their diary? Maybe if authorities dig a little deeper, they will find Jill Cutshall and the other women.
