Neil Armstrong has passed away at the age of 82. Armstrong's family released a statement confirming that the legendary astronaut was gone. The man that made a "giant leap for mankind" had just celebrated his 82nd birthday on August 5th. No word on his cause of death has been released.
Armstrong, a former test pilot, set foot on the moon under the Kennedy administration and spent 20 minutes as the only human to have done so before his crew mate Buzz Aldrin joined him. Nearly a sixth of the world's population watched Neil take those first steps and his words have been immortalized in television and film multiple times in the years after.
The world has lost a large piece of modern history in the passing of Neil Armstrong. Very few have ever been into space and even fewer have walked on the moon. Armstrong was an American treasure that can never be replaced and will never be forgotten.

Armstrong represents the highest achievement of the American empire and, indeed, of humanity itself. The dignity with which he carried his historic stature was very admirable, refusing numerous requests to capitalize on his fame.
Condolences to the Armstrong family. Thanks, Neil, for the memories.
You know what is a bummer, there has been an entire generation of people who were born and grown into adulthood that have never, ever seen a man walk on the Moon live on TV. I'm 46 and I remember. When I look at the Moon, I think of a true minority of a minority, in all of known human history, there have only been 12 people who can claim to have walked on the Moon. These men are in their 80's and we are losing them, it is an unfortunate fact of life, but it bums me that they might not live to see another American on the Moon. The Moon landings were America's greatest triumph and I feel great to have seen it.
I think of that everytime I look up at the Moon.
Godspeed, Neil Armstrong.
