If you have just woken up to the drudgery of another day, then you might not be aware of the fact that yesterday was International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Yes, it's true. This is when all pirate aficionados gather from around the world and celebrate by talking like a pirate.
The holiday was invented by two guys who happened to be playing racquetball and shouted out "Arrrrr" instead of something normal like "Ouch." The holiday was further publicized by humor columnist Dave Barry, who received a letter from the two men who created the day - John Baur and Mark Summers, known as Cap'n Slappy and Chumbucket on TLAP Day respectively.
The day was adopted as an official religious holiday by The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which is a satirical religion made up to poke fun at some of the other major religions in the world. It was first brought up in 2005 when Bobby Henderson mentioned it as an example in a letter that he wrote to protest intelligent design, otherwise known as creationism being taught in schools in place of, or alongside, evolution.
If you didn't get a chance to celebrate yesterday, you can still walk around saying "Arrrrr" and "Shiver me timbers!" You can even dress up as a pirate if you'd like, although some office-mates may give you some strange looks. Just don't celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day by illegally downloading a movie from the Internet (otherwise known as modern piracy) because... well... that's illegal.
Here is a fun guide to talking like a pirate.
