Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the 2005 Natalee Holloway missing person case, is back in the news. Van der Sloot, a Dutch national, who is currently serving a 28-year prison term in Peru after being convicted of robbing and killing Stephany Flores in 2010, is reported to have impregnated a woman, identified only as "Leidi," while he was in prison.
According to The Huffington Post, the woman was said to have become pregnant during an unsupervised visit with van der Sloot. Whether Peruvian prisons allow these kinds of meetings is not clear at this time.
Although a Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, says that van der Sloot has confirmed the pregnancy, and has said he believes the child is his, it should be noted that van der Sloot is a self-admitted liar. His lack of credibility was obvious when he repeatedly confessed to the killing of American teenager Natalee Holloway, only to later retract the confessions.
If this woman really is pregnant with van der Sloot's child, one can't help but wonder if it was intentional, and if so, why? It has been reported by The Christian Post that "Leidi" took birth control pills but might have forgotten to take one on that particular day—how fortuitous. It is also being said that "Leidi" is a Catholic and would not get an abortion due to her religious faith.
It is interesting that this should happen now, considering the fact that van der Sloot is wanted by U.S. authorities for allegedly extorting money from the Holloway family on the promise that he would reveal the location of Natalee's body. Joran van der Sloot could resist extradition to the U.S. if he obtains Peruvian nationality, which would be possible if he fathers a Peruvian child.
