A routine welfare check at a home in Farmingdale, New York turned up the body of a toddler. An official with Suffolk County CPS had went to the home on Wednesday to check the health of one of Heather Kowalczik's three children. The official became alarmed when no one would say where Justin Kowalczik, who was born in 2009, could be found.

In the dark of night, Ms. Kowalczik finally led police to where they could find the body of the toddler, buried in the backyard of the home. She told them he had died in 2010, when he was 17 months old, and she hadn't reported his death to authorities. His cause of death is not yet known.
Robert Rodriguez, Kowalczik's boyfriend and father of her two older kids, but not Justin's father, is not talking. He did not willingly come to police and is not cooperating in the investigation.
What's going on here? Some may think it sounds like Rodriguez abused Justin and caused his death. If that's the case, why would his mother have not reported it? Was she protecting her boyfriend? That's pretty crappy. How could you choose some flighty love interest over your own baby?
On the other hand, maybe the child died in some kind of accident, and instead of reporting it and dealing with all the accusations and questioning, his mother just placed him somewhere close and went on. Hmmm, that sounds vaguely familiar. Is it ringing any Casey Anthony bells for anyone else?
At this point, neither the mother or the boyfriend have been charged, but it's surely only a matter of time. Someone will have to be held accountable for this little boy's death.
